RESUMO O presente trabalho analisa o primeiro trecho do Diário de José Custódio de Sá e Faria, concretamente o caminho feito por terra, em quatro dias, entre São Paulo e Araritaguaba (Porto Feliz), que prosseguiria por rios até o Forte de Iguatemi. O foco são os cinco mapas que delineiam o trajeto percorrido nesses dias. O texto desse borrão, primeira versão feita durante a viagem, foi transcrito e comparado com outras versões do Diário e do mapa, em apêndice documental comentado. Uma análise das informações latentes permitiu determinar em detalhe esse antigo caminho que data de tempos imemoriais, provavelmente do século XVI. Desenvolveu-se uma metodologia de trabalho para essa determinação que pode ser aplicada em outros casos e torna-se particularmente interessante em um momento em que os órgãos responsáveis pelo patrimônio realizam tombamentos de caminhos.

ABSTRACT This paper analyzes the first strecht of the Diary of José Custódio de Sá e Faria, specifically the 4-day overland route between São Paulo and Araritaguaba (Porto Feliz), which would continue along rivers to Iguatemi Fort. The focus is on the five maps that outline the route traveled these days. The text of this draft, the first version made during the trip, was transcribed and compared with other versions of the Diary and the associated map, in a commented documentary appendix. An analysis of latent information has allowed us to determine in detail this ancient path dating from time immemorial, probably from the 16th century. A working methodology has been developed for this determination, which can be applied in other cases and becomes particularly interesting at a time when the organizations responsible for Heritage carry out memory preservation.

Abstract: This study compares in quantitative terms two methods of differential corrections to GPS positioning from the code-based pseudoranges. The differential method calculated from the coordinates (Latitude, Longitude and Altitude), called Position-Domain DGPS, has simple implementation and easy transmission by the correction vector. The second method, called Pseudorange-Domain DGPS has a more elaborate algorithm, focused on the pseudorange correction for each visible satellite, which consumes more processing time and increases the complexity in the transmission of the corrections. Notwithstanding a few variations from this DGPS techniques proposed, this work intends to verify in a numeric way the bias and precision offered by these two well-known methods in different devices and situations, to assess in which context each method would be more advantageous when one what to apply a simple DGPS correction; showing how much is the gain by way of bias the more elaborated method is. The results demonstrate that in favorable conditions, the Position-Domain offered an improvement of approximately 50% in positioning, 35% in dispersion, but without any significant bettering in altimetry or in the maximum values; wile the Pseudorange-Domain method showed 70% in positioning, 75% in precision, 60% for maximum values and numbers close to zero on average altimetry.

Um dos primeiros mapas científicos da região amazônica (Le Cours de La Rivière des Amazones), elaborado por Nicolas Sanson, cartógrafo francês do século XVII, serviu de protótipo para muitos mapas da região. No entanto, a avaliação desse mapa, até o presente estudo, é que se trata de um mapa muito defeituoso, um esboço baseado em relato histórico, segundo uma apreciação de La Condamine que se difundiu até os nossos dias. Assim, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi provar que, pelo contrário, é um trabalho científico: um mapa que possui coordenadas geográficas precisas para a sua época, um meridiano de origem bem determinado e que empregou uma metodologia criativa para deduzir as longitudes a partir de latitudes e distâncias percorridas. Para isso foi feita uma análise da precisão desse mapa, comparando suas latitudes e longitudes com as de um mapa atual; bem como a determinação do meridiano de origem e a metodologia utilizada por esse cartógrafo para o cálculo das longitudes. A conclusão é que ele é um bom mapa para a época, tendo em conta as poucas informações de que o autor dispunha, e isso mostrou que são infundadas as apreciações negativas de La Condamine.

One of the first scientific maps of the Amazon region, The Course of the Amazon River (Le Cours de La Rivière des Amazones), was constructed by Nicolas Sanson, a French cartographer of the seventeenth century, and served as the prototype for many others. The evaluation of this chart, until now, has been that it is a very defective map, a sketch based on a historical account, according to the opinion of La Condamine. Thus, the aim of the present work was to prove that the map of the Amazon River traced by Nicolas Sanson is a scientific work, a map that presents precise geographic coordinates considering its time, shows a well-determined prime meridian, and also employs a creative methodology to deduce longitudes from latitudes and distances that had been covered. To show such characteristics, an analysis of the accuracy of the map was made by comparing its latitudes and longitudes with those of a current map. We determined the prime meridian of this map and analyzed the methodology used for the calculation of longitudes. The conclusion is that it is actually a good map for the time, particularly considering the technology and the limited information that Sanson had at his disposal. This proves that the negative assertion of La Condamine is unfounded.
